Maintaining its tradition of supporting the African American community, Hyatt Hotels & Resorts was a proud sponsor of the Seventh Annual Women of Strength and Courage Awards program recently hosted by American Legacy magazine in New York City. The Women of Strength and Courage Awards celebrate the accomplishments of remarkable women of color. Hyatt’s long term alliance with American Legacy-the nation’s premier magazine for African American history and culture-reflects yet another example of the hotel chain’s continued commitment to spearhead purposeful diversity initiatives. "Events like the American Legacy Women of Strength and Courage Awards are not only important to Hyatt’s continued efforts to support advancements in diversity within the community, but are equally important to honor and showcase the achievements of exceptional African American women," said Sal Mendoza, Assistant Vice President of Diversity for Hyatt Hotels & Resorts. The awards luncheon, held at the Grand Hyatt New York, honored several highly respected women including: the first Black woman elected to the United States Senate Carol Moseley Braun; author, playwright and radio personality Vy Higgensen; esteemed daughter of Martin Luther King, Rev. Bernice A. King; world famous singer and actress Della Reese; and famed writer Ntozake Shange. WWOR TV News anchor Brenda Blackmon served as mistress of ceremonies. Activities surrounding this signature affair included Hyatt’s sponsorship of the Youth Forum, which allowed teens from local New York City high schools to speak with the esteemed honorees. Hyatt also served as a major sponsor of the event’s scholarship program and co-host of the affair’s kick-off reception held in Harlem.
