African American Prosperity At De Gullah Creations
    By: Norwood Professionals 12/05

Julia and Meka are two hard working corporate professionals who transform themselves into stylish shopping queens as often as they can. Weighed down with a variety of bags embossed with Saks, Ann Taylor, and Victoria’s Secret, brimming with fragrances, pumps, belts, blouses, creams, gems, suits, and ‘sheer’ delights, they decide to visit one last store.

On their way to Belk, an attractive board game catches Meka’s eye, “Ohhh look Julia, [pointing at Prosperity,] isn’t that nice? It looks like a Black game, the sign beside it says: ‘...[W]hen players see Black faces on high-value currency, see symbols of Black academic achievement, experience investment in Black communities, and exercise progressive cooperative-economics in an achievement driven environment just for fun, it inspires real life success ...’ wow, that’s great my dad will love it, let’s go in, I’ve got to get one.”

“Hello ladies, welcome to De Gullah Creations, how may I help you.” Mrs. Johnnie Mitchell, the gallery proprietor greets.
“I was looking at the board game in the window…” Meka replied.
    “Oh yes Prosperity …”
“Yes, yes, how much is…”said Meka before interruption.
“Meka, look at these earrings aren’t they gorgeous; ohhhhh, and the matching necklace is extraordinary, my aunt will love them, what do you think?” Julia exclaimed.
Meka to Julia in a calming tone: “Yes, they are lovely.”
Meka to Johnnie Mitchell: “What is the price for the game?”
“$49.95 plus tax, with complimentary gift wrap and a gift card, would you like it wrapped?” answered Johnnie.
“$50., great … maybe I should get two, yes please gift wrap two of them. Do you have a Kente pattern?”
“Yes we do, would you like them both wrapped with the same pattern?”
“No, I’m giving one to my Dad for Christmas, a traditional Christmas pattern would be fine for him; the Kente is for my uncle, I’ll give him his during Kwanzaa.” Meka replied.

Meka skimmed the product information sheet posted next to the game display.
    “Product Description
PROSPERITY is a premium board game, designed with a complex strategy, to provide an inspiring and enjoyable environment for African American achievement. Like that of Chess, Backgammon, and Warri, Prosperity's dynamic strategy flexes with the skill level of its players…

… PROSPERITY is fashioned with the finest materials available in the board game industry. The game box has a bold and reverential cultural design; the game board's vibrant colors maximize visual stimulation; the game's currency collectively link Africa and America with wisdom and wealth; the game's pure pewter player pieces symbolize: leadership, responsibility, family, intelligence, security, and political power; and the game's power cards add a healthy dose of surprise and intrigue to the game…”

Johnnie to Meka: “It should take about 10 minutes to wrap.”
Johnnie to an employee: “Franklin, would you wrap two of the games, one with a Christmas pattern and the other with the Kente pattern, thank you.”
Johnnie to Julia: “May we box and wrap the necklace and earrings set for you?”
“Yes, with a cream or ivory wrap thanks.” Julia answered.

Having received a sufficient view of the store’s goods Meka asks: “What kind of store is this, I mean no offense, but is this an African store?”

“Hahahaha, no offense taken. This is De Gullah Creations, we specialize in fine hand-crafted African American art, crafts, clothing, and house wares, although, as you could see we also sell various other products. Many of our customers view us as a museum, a gallery, and/or a research center in addition to a store of Gullah works.”

In perfect unison Julia and Meka respond: “Gullah?”

While processing the charges and packing the bags Johnnie continues: “Gullah is a three century old civilization, formed when our descendants from West African were forcible brought to the coastal islands of South Carolina and Georgia. Gullah is a people, a language, and a culture; actually an African American people, language, and culture. Here are a few brochures on Gullah life. So, what brings you to Hilton Head Island?”

Julia answers: “We’re board members for a pharmaceutical firm, we flew in for a weekend of critical meetings, but had to squeeze in some shopping time. [hahahahaah] In fact, we really better get back to the hotel, tomorrow is expected to be a very long day.”
“Yes, and thanks, I really learned a lot in these few minutes.” said Meke as she collected her receipt and bag. “I noticed the annual Gullah Celebration in this brochure it looks interesting, I think my husband and children will love the experience.”

With their large collection of shopping bags in tow the sistas exit the store towards the parking garage.
